The Homelessness Crisis Within England's Prisons Walls The government's pledge to eradicate rough sleeping in England hangs precariously in the balance.
Nearly one in six people leaving jail last year were released into homelessness, a rate of 15. 9% that is the highest in five years and threatens the prime minister's promise.
The numbers are disheartening: over 300 individuals per week – or more than 15,155 people total – were freed from prison without a roof over their heads between April 2025 and March 2026.
