Recent research by Aviloo has alleviated these concerns, showing that most used EVs can retain up to 90 percent of their original battery capacity even after 150,000 kilometers. According to Marcus Berger, chief executive of Aviloo, “The car might look the same—same age, same mileage—and you don’t know how it has been treated.” This highlights a curious fact: we’ve fixated on the wrong problem.
Battery durability provides a convenient way for critics to sidestep discussions about EVs’ many advantages. By harping on worn-out batteries, opponents can avoid addressing environmental benefits and rapidly improving affordability and performance. This narrative has been perpetuated by media outlets and industry pundits, creating a self-reinforcing cycle that obscures more important issues.
Aviloo’s study reinforces the notion that EV manufacturers have been conservative in their estimates of battery lifespan. Warranties typically cover eight years or 100,000 miles (160,000 km), but Aviloo’s data suggests batteries will still be strong long after those limits are exceeded. This is good news for drivers who’ve invested in EVs and raises questions about the wisdom of manufacturers’ warranty policies.
The study was based on over 500,000 tests conducted globally between 2022 and 2026, covering 20 popular EV models including Tesla’s Model Y and Volkswagen’s ID.4. The sample size is skewed towards Western markets, with Chinese models excluded due to lack of data. This limitation highlights the need for more comprehensive research on EV batteries in emerging markets.
The implications extend beyond electric vehicles themselves. Berger observed that “In contrast to a combustion engine car, where age and mileage would more or less carry the value of the car and technical condition, that’s not the case for an EV.” This statement has broader implications for vehicle depreciation and maintenance costs. If EVs are indeed less prone to wear and tear than internal combustion engine counterparts, it could change the way we think about car ownership.
Manufacturers will need to reassess their strategies in response to Aviloo’s findings. Will they adjust production or warranty policies?
